  • shutdown - shut down part of a full-duplex connection

    #include <sys/socket.h>

           int shutdown(int sockfd, int how);
    The shutdown() call causes all or part of a full-duplex connection on
           the socket associated with sockfd to be shut down. If how is SHUT_RD,
           further receptions will be disallowed. If how is SHUT_WR, further
           transmissions will be disallowed. If how is SHUT_RDWR, further
           receptions and transmissions will be disallowed.
  • shutdown - bring the system down

    shutdown [OPTION]...  TIME [MESSAGE]
    shutdown arranges for the system to be brought down in a safe way. All
           logged-in users are notified that the system is going down and, within
           the last five minutes of TIME, new logins are prevented.

           TIME may have different formats, the most common is simply the word
  • reboot - reboot or enable/disable Ctrl-Alt-Del

    /* For libc4 and libc5 the library call and the system call
              are identical, and since kernel version 2.1.30 there are
              symbolic names LINUX_REBOOT_* for the constants and a
              fourth argument to the call: */

    The reboot() call reboots the system, or enables/disables the reboot
           keystroke (abbreviated CAD, since the default is Ctrl-Alt-Delete; it
           can be changed using loadkeys(1)).

           This system call will fail (with EINVAL) unless magic equals
  • reboot, halt, poweroff - reboot or stop the system

    reboot [OPTION]...

           halt [OPTION]...

           poweroff [OPTION]...
    These programs allow a system administrator to reboot, halt or poweroff
           the system.

           When called with --force or when in runlevel 0 or 6, this tool invokes
           the reboot(2) system call itself and directly reboots the system.
